A Look At Some of the Cars That Shaped Hot Rod History
Here is a short list of some of the most recognizable and well-known custom hot rods. These are landmark cars that have left a lasting impression on hot-rodders and the general public at large. Any hot rod enthusiast should have a working knowledge of these cars and the elements that make them unique in their field.
- Ala Kart: 1929 Ford Pickup Roadster built by George Barris for Richard Peters. First show rod to be turned into a 1/25 scale model car kit.
- The Hirohata Merc: Another famous custom by George Barris and his brother Sam. One of the most famous and well-known custom cars in hot rod history: It is the classic chopped Mercury.
- Lil Deuce Coupe: The Lil Deuce Coupe made famous by The Beach Boys and featured on the cover of that album. This hot rod had been in circulation for years before it fell under the hands of George Barris and reached the height of its fame.
- Milner's Coupe: Alongside the Lil Deuce Coupe, this hot rod entered the public consciousness through the entertainment industry. This is the famous yellow '32 Ford Coupe driven by John Milner in George Lucas' American Graffiti.
- Boydster: Yet another coupe. This elegant and deceivingly simple hot rod was created by the legendary Boyd Coddington.
- CadZZilla: A 1948 Cadillac built by Boyd Coddington for Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.
- The Tall T: One of the the most famous Ford Model T Coupe hot rods. it was build in the 1960s by Joe Cruces and became an instant classic.
- The Predicta: The original bubble-top custom car created by the legendary Darryl Starbird. If you have an inclination for futuristic-looking vehicles, check out this one and the rest of Starbird's many fascinating creations.
- The Orbitron: Ed Roth's famous Orbitron is another bubble-top vehicle, but this one was designed by Ed "Newt" Newton. It is a futuristic-looking drag racer. Like so many old cars, it has passed through numerous hands and was lost for a long time before it was discovered in Mexico parked outside of an adult book store: a story that many would consider in keeping with Ed Roth's style.
